Does how you react to rejection reveal your mental health?

“It’s over, I can’t be with you anymore.”

How do these words make you feel? Desperate, infuriated, depressed, suicidal ..?

While it’s normal to feel all or some of the above at some point, how you choose to deal with the feelings says a lot about your mental state.

In life, disappointments are inevitable and more so in matters of the heart. If you find it hard to accept rejection and even toy with ideas of violence or even murder, you may be standing on emotional quicksand

Worrisome trend

Murder and suicide cases have been on the rise in the last couple of months. The Global Study of Homicide by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (2018) lists mental illness as a key motive for murder, among other factors.

In the cases where the murder was a crime of passion, many claimed that if one spends money and time seeking your affection, then you are obligated to reciprocate. But, are you?

No. It really does take two to tango but if your partner pulls out of the dance, change the music. Dance the Kuchipudi if you have to.

If  you sense a heartbreak is handing you the keys to the armoury, it’s time to check your emotional stability

Emotional stability is your ability to stay calm and composed even in an unpleasant situation. Do you act more irrationally after rejection than the average person?

Different people react differently to similar situations depending on their nature. Neuroticism is a wide-character element that denotes a person’s extent of judging the world as being upsetting, hostile, and insecure. If you rank high on neuroticism then you tend to experience more negative emotions than others.

If you’re in doubt of your emotional stability, take an online test. There are various sites where you can take these tests for free. Once you know your level of emotional stability and how much stress you can withstand before you break, you will be more sensible and in control of your actions.

Get any mental health issues addressed

Mental health is not easy to detect and diagnose. You as the victim may actually not recognize that you have a problem. The people around you may be sensing that your reactions are somewhat off and you shouldn’t ignore such concerns.

Mental illness does not just refer to Schizophrenia or simply ‘going crazy’ as many erroneously believe. There are more issues that may affect your reasoning capacity, causing you to act irrationally in the heat of the moment.

Do a thorough self-analysis and investigate if you have struggled with issues such as depression, anger management, panic attacks, anxiety attacks or even bipolar disorder. If you suspect that you may be suffering from any mental condition, you should seek medical intervention. This seemingly simple action may save you from making life-altering mistakes or jail.

Conclusion

Mental health and emotional stability should be taken with the seriousness they deserve. Many homicides and especially crimes of passion could be avoided if more emphasis was laid on mental health as is the case with other physical illnesses. People who commit such crimes may be sick, and getting them treatment may be one step towards non-violence.
